Xeno!Spine here is demonstrating something I originally called ‘skyhopping’ but I think ‘periscoping’ is a better term. He is capable of emerging partially out of his chassis to get a better view of something. For the most part he fits in his body much like a hermit crab, except his chassis has rib slots where his legs can lock into. When periscoping his legs rest/grip near the neck opening of his chassis for support.

What I think is a neat mental image is how he goes back in his body. I just picture his legs raising and withdrawing back in and him sinking back down until his neck is an acceptable length, and he’s fully plugged back in.

Maybe it’s something similar to a tarantula backing up into it’s burrow…
